The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen is back! Check out the first official trailer for Daredevil season 3:
(Spoilers for The Defenders ahead)
We last saw Matt Murdock in Marvel’s The Defenders. After being trapped underneath the ruins of the Midland Circle building, Murdock was presumed dead. However, the final scene of The Defenders showed that The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen was still alive, in an unknown location being taken care of by nuns. As Matt wakes up, a nearby nun calls out for someone named Maggie.
This “Maggie” is most likely Matt’s mother, Maggie Murdock. Maggie was first introduced during Daredevil #229 in 1986. She had an integral part in Daredevil’s most famous story arc, Born Again.
Daredevil season 3 will be adapting their own version of the Born Again story. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter following The Defenders, Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock/Daredevil) was asked if he would want to adopt the iconic story to the Netflix series:
“For sure. That’s such an amazing story. Everyone who loves Daredevil loves Born Again. You can’t not. And if that’s the case, then the implications of that would be very exciting to me. That would be great. Having said that, I know we don’t tend to follow any story blueprints too closely, because if you do, then you become a foregone conclusion. There may be elements from Born Again, but I’m sure there will be elements that are unfamiliar and surprising and different in order for the show to be compelling to fans who know the comics very well. If we start making Born Again page-for-page, then the people who have read it and loved it — the hardcore fans — they won’t have too much drama.”
Even though Daredevil season 3 will be heavily influenced by the Born Again arc, it definitely won’t be adapting it page for page. The story in the comics featured Karen Page (who in this iteration was a porn star addicted to heroin) divulging Daredevil’s secret identity to her dealer in order to get a fix. Kingpin eventually found out this news and proceeded to make Matt Murdock’s life miserable.
Daredevil season 3 will premiere on Netflix October 19th, 2018.
