Released as a PC exclusive in 2019, developer Unfold Games released DARQ to modest critical reception, with our site review praising the game for its oppressive atmosphere and Tim Burton visuals. It follows the story of Lloyd and his adventures into lucid dreaming, with him unable to control his dreams properly. Soon enough, the dreams turn into nightmares, hideous creatures arrive, and he’s forced to survive.
The game features heavy puzzle elements within a 3D environment, consistently bending the rules of physics and defying gravity. Lloyd is more of a thinker than a fighter, which is why an enemy’s presence has to be met with stealth rather than combat. Whether you walk on walls or hide from the creatures, you have to move around them and think beyond staring at the exit to make it out.
The announcement of DARQ: Complete Edition also showed off two DLC packs included, named The Tower and The Crypt, the latter being an all-new expansion for the game. Unfold Games introduces brand new mechanics with the DLC, along with The Crypt being longer than The Tower. That’s not all for Unfold Games, however, as they’ve also announced their own Unfold Games Awards.
Wlad Marhulets, founder of Unfold Games, announced the indie game competition, with over $170,000 in funding and prizes. From November 30, 2020, to May 20, 2021, teams of 10 or less are allowed a limit of one game.
