A Delaware shopper was at a shopping center with her cousins, checking out at her local JCPenney store. According to the shopper, a security guard approached them and accused them of stealing shortly after they entered. She says they were then told to leave, even though they insisted they hadn’t taken anything. Now, she’s speaking out about what happened.
Nasia (@lul.nasiaa) claims that she and her cousins were racially profiled at a JCPenney store in Wilmington, Delaware. She was shopping to find an outfit for a young cousin’s school photos. Suddenly, she says a security guard approached them five minutes after they entered the store. According to the security guard, somebody reported that “two black girls were stealing.” Nasia says another female shopper identified her and her cousins as the people suspected of stealing, an accusation she strongly denies.
Nasia says she asked security to check the surveillance footage to clear up the accusation, but claims they refused. Instead of checking cameras, Nasia says security told them to “leave the entire Prices Corner shopping center,” not just the JCPenney store. She says they were being kicked out over a theft accusation she insists was completely false.
Nasia went to a manager at the shopping center and told them what happened. According to Nasia, a manager eventually told her and her cousins they were “fine to shop” and that the security guard had been wrong to ask them to leave. However, it was a humiliating experience for her and her cousins. Although she didn’t capture a video of the actual event, she shows a video of her walking around and getting names from everyone involved. She decided to move forward and email JCPenney about the incident. Nasia says she has contacted JCPenney multiple times but has not received a response.
Nasia states, “THIS CANNOT BE IGNORED. I want JCPenney corporate to acknowledge my complaint, investigate what happened, identify everyone involved, preserve the surveillance footage, and take appropriate accountability.” She refuses to allow this to be “swept under the rug.”
Commenters immediately responded to Nasia’s video following the concerning incident. One commenter simply stated, “They big racist in there.”
Others had comments and opinions about JCPenney stores in general. As one noted, “I don’t even go in there anymore. The prices are ridiculous. I grabbed a plaid button down, pre-Covid, and it was $49.99. That’s about $65 now. For some JCPenney crap? No.” Commenters continue to share personal stories about shopping prices and racism in Nasia’s video comments.
