A man in Iowa was filmed using a racial slur toward a mother who was with her children following a driving dispute.
According to the woman, the incident occurred after she moved in front of the man while making a turn. At the time, she was heading to Walker Johnston Park in Urbandale with her children.
In the video, the man is seen calling the woman the n-word in front of her children. She alleged that he also followed her for about four minutes and took a photo of her license plate. Over the video, she wrote, “this world is so nasty.”
KCCI provided additional details about the incident. The woman reportedly said she could not remember whether she used her turn signal. She stated that the man then got closer to her vehicle and made an obscene gesture, which she returned. She also claimed that he later followed her into the park and asked if she wanted to fight. Because she had her children with her, she kept them inside the car until he left. She later called 911.
While the woman’s father believed she handled the situation appropriately, the Urbandale Police Department later acknowledged concerns about its handling. According to reports, when the woman went to file a police report, an officer “initially told her the incident did not meet the criteria for harassment.” The officer also said that “the man had likely calmed down and she should not worry.”
When the woman’s father contacted the police chief and mayor, the situation was reviewed further. The department later provided a statement to KCCI saying, “Based on what we know, there appears to have been some confusion about the process and about what next steps were available. On April 5th, 2026, the person impacted by this incident came into the police department to file a formal police report. Once police administration was made aware that a formal report had not been taken, immediate steps were taken to properly document this incident. We want to make sure residents receive clear, consistent guidance.”
The police are now investigating the man for harassment and have stated that they are taking both the incident and the follow-up response seriously.
The incident is gaining attention because it shows a woman being subjected to a racist attack in front of her children. It sparked discussion about how road rage incidents can escalate into unacceptable behavior. It also led to conversations about how law enforcement handles and responds to such reports.
People Reacting to the Iowa Man Using a Racial Slur
The video sparked reactions online. Many people sympathized with the Iowa woman following the incident. Several also criticized the initial police response. “So the police are refusing to release his name to the public? Let’s hope that changes. There are consequences for your actions,” one person wrote. Another added, “That cop not taking the report in part ‘because he’s probably calmed down now’. Wow.” This prompted another comment, “Cops are the laziest people you will ever meet.”
More people expressed frustration with the police’s initial response. One person claimed the reaction was racially motivated, writing, “They ‘acknowledged a breakdown in their reporting process.’ They outright disregarded a complaint from a black woman. That’s not a breakdown in the process, that’s just racism from an officer,” they wrote. Others emphasized that, regardless of the driving dispute, the woman did not deserve the way she was treated. “I’m not a big fan of people pulling in front of me to turn either, especially when there’s no one behind me. But I’ve never followed a mother, with her kids in the car, to the park either,” someone said.
The incident involving the mother and her children led to widespread concern online, particularly regarding the police’s initial response to the situation.
