Descent: Underground has been released on Steam under Early Access this week, the classic PC title was successfully funded on Kickstarter earlier this year with 8,164 backers who pledged $601,773. The release date for the complete version has been announced as March 2016, and will be supported on PC, Mac OS X and Linux.
The first person shooter is built on the Unreal Engine 4 and is being made to be a prequel to the original Descent series which first appeared in 1994 on MS-DOS. The developers Descendent Studios have said that they will be modernising the gameplay, and go on to say on their steam page “We’re staying true to the original flight mechanics, arcade style combat and tightly twisting map design.” The developers hope to include a multiplayer player vs player mode with rankings and leader boards. Descendent Studios have also announced a cooperative mode, on top of this they have also said that multiplayer games will “affect the larger game world”.
Virtual Reality headsets and controllers are planned to be supported on release for Descent: Underground, Descendent Studios have also said that there will be cross-platform play. Customization has also been emphasized on, player made maps will be supported, ships will customizable and have different roles.
