Gru and the Minions have some new faces to meet. Universal and Illumination have released the trailer for Despicable Me 4, which adds newcomers Sofia Vergara and Will Ferrell (seen below).
Reformed villain Gru (Steve Carell) and his family have a new addition with Gru Jr. Their peaceful lives are disrupted, and they must go on the run after new adversaries appear with Maxime Le Mal (Ferrell) and his girlfriend, Valentina (Vergara). Other returning stars include Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Steve Coogan, Chris Renaud, Dana Gaier, and Pierre Coffin. The new baddies are joined by Joey King, Stephen Colbert, Chloe Fineman, and Madison Polan.

Chris Renaud co-directs with Patrick Delage from a script penned by Mike White. Both directors have worked on previous installments, but Delage has not directed a feature-length project before. Renaud helmed the first two Despicable Me entries. This is the first of the franchise that White has written.
The trailer for Despicable Me 4 sets up the sixth entry in the franchise. The previous five films have accumulated $4.6 billion worldwide. The fourth film, 2015’s Minions, currently stands as the highest-grossing film with $1.1 billion. The other billionaire installment is 2017’s Despicable Me 3, which earned $1.03 billion. Even the lowest earner was a massive hit that spawned all these sequels a decade later with 2013’s Despicable Me ($544 million).
The film is one of the biggest projects for both of its new antagonists. The Modern Family star currently has her Netflix hit series, Griselda. Meanwhile, the Step Brothers star has been more focused on producing in recent years while still getting in plenty of acting, like in last year’s Barbie.
Despicable Me 4 will be released on July 3.
