Despite Some Players Asking for It, Marvel Rivals Still Doesn’t Want To Add Role Queue, ‘It’s All About Giving the Players the Freedom to Experiment’

Assemble your team your way

With all the success that Marvel Rivals has been enjoying lately, there’s still one topic that divides the fanbase considerably: role queue. In other hero shooters, not all of them, when players queue for a match, they have to select their desired role. Usually, this leads to a somewhat balanced match where every player fulfills a role, be it healer, tank, or DPS. However, Marvel Rivals didn’t add the role queue feature to the game, and there are still no plans to do so anytime soon.

Marvel Rivals Director Claims the Lack of Role Queue Will Lead to a Richer Gaming Experience

According to a recent interview by Metro, Marvel Rivals Director, Guangyun Chen claims the lack of a role queue is for the better.

Yeah, so we totally get that the community is discussing role lock and role queue. At its core, it’s really about the game balance. So, what we want to offer is more line-up or more team comp possibilities through our hero design and our team-up mechanic. So, we’ll be taking a little bit more of a Marvel-inspired approach.

From what we can gather, the director has heard players ask about the role queue feature being implemented in Marvel Rivals. However, Chen mentions the team prefers to offer different team composition options that focus on the game’s team-up mechanic. In truth, this doesn’t sound bad at all. One of the best things about Marvel Rivals is how it leans heavily on the hero team aspect, which makes sense both mechanically and from a lore perspective. Having a role queue could harm this. Chen also mentions that adding a role queue wouldn’t benefit the game.

It’s all about giving the players the freedom to experiment and find their unique strategies, as we’ve seen in many games and streams. Post-launch, people have been exploring an indefinite amount of team compositions, and we’re excited about what’s coming, we believe no role queue will lead to a richer gaming experience for everyone.

Guangyun Checn via Metro

It’s great that freedom when playing seems to be such a core pillar of Marvel Rivals. Personally, I feel role queue can feel restrictive at times. It is better to always play your favorite hero instead of forcing yourself to learn how to use one just to fill up a role. In that sense, Marvel Rivals has a great philosophy that doesn’t punish or discourage players from playing one hero all the time.

Yet, it might be too early to tell how this will play out in the future. While the game already announced it is bringing at least two new heroes per season, it remains uncertain how balancing all of them will work. We’ve seen games like LoL having problems with Champion overpopulation, so we hope Rivals doesn’t fall into that.
