In the Latest TWID from Bungie, we learned about some significant changes coming to the currency system in Destiny 2, specifically, Legendary Shards. While it could go either way, removing these Shards from Destiny 2 couldn’t be better. Regarding Legendary Shards, you either have too many or need more. There is rarely any “in-between” with them. Due to Legendary Shards being a volatile part of the Destiny 2 economy, Bungie chooses to do away with them altogether. Is it a good idea for Destiny 2 to continue punishing veterans to benefit the casuals? You bet it is, and we can’t get enough of it.
Getting Rid of Legendary Shards in Season 23 Is a Great Decision
In Bungie’s latest TWID post, they announced that they would remove Legendary Shards from the game altogether after casually asking, “How many Legendary Shards do you have?” Clearly, the devs at Bungie are well aware of those who have hoarded these shards for years and, even worse, those who have gotten involved with Shard duping. I have one primary thought on the statement: “Heck Yeah!” The players who duped and played the system to get ahead should be called out and penalized!
What about those who don’t play the game like their life depends on it? We’ve been on the losing end of a scale that never seems to tip in our direction. How many times have you been personally victimized by Destiny 2‘s currency systems and all their glitches and bugs? If you’re a complete casual like I am, the answer is likely often. Veterans have gotten away with hoarding Legendary Shards for years. They have all the currency in the world to get all the best things in-game. Honestly, as somebody who doesn’t have time to dump my entire life into a game, it sucks that I’ll never be able to get the things they have — until now.
Bungie explains some of the issues with their game’s economy by stating,
“Some players have more than they would ever be able to spend, while others struggle to earn enough to engage with the systems that require Shards as a cost.”
Bungie aims to make Destiny 2 a fairer, well-rounded game, which couldn’t make us happier.
Additionally, Bungie has added,
“Couple the Legendary Shard wealth disparity with the fact that we have seen more than a few loopholes players have found to farm (our regards to Rahool and Eva Levante, as well as more recently to Ikora), we have made the decision that it’s time to simplify the economy by removing this currency from the game.”
Bungie’s got the right idea in mind, and we sincerely hope they see it through. Witnessing the death of Legendary Shards will undeniably be the highlight of my years spent playing Destiny 2. Wouldn’t it be nice to see the veterans have to put in as much time and effort as we, the casuals, do? I sure think so.
Changing Destiny 2’s Currency Improves the Overall Game Economy
Considering Bungie’s goal to make their game easier to understand and make players feel as if their time is valuable, it’s no surprise that there will be massive changes to the game’s economy. These changes will benefit all the casuals and make the veterans reconsider their “I’m better than you” stance.
Removing Legendary Shards from Destiny 2 won’t happen all at once; it’ll come in phases. Beginning in Season 23, Legendary Shard costs will be wiped from the Monument of Lost Lights. Following that, Legendary Shards will be entirely removed from ritual gear focusing.
Below, we can see some of the new changes that will significantly impact Destiny 2 in favor of the casual players who’ve been left in the dust by veterans:
- Focusing Adept weapons will now require you to get seven wins in Trials Passages or 10 Nightfall Ciphers, shifting the process quite a bit.
- Dismantling will no longer net you extra Legendary Shards. Instead, it will give you Enhancement Cores and Glimmer with the opportunity for a Secondary Reward Drop and a decent amount of Gunsmith Reputation.
Getting Access to Ships and Sparrows Is a Dream Come True
In addition to the other changes made to the Destiny 2 economy surrounding the use of Legendary Shards, Bungie is making some significant changes regarding ships and Sparrows. In the future, the plan is to entirely get rid of the cost to pull ships and Sparrow items from Collections. With this possibility, players will be able to change up the style of their ride in Destiny 2 as often as they’d like and without having to spend any currency.
That said, they will no longer have to dismantle rewards. However, we’re always happy to see developers allowing their players the chance to express themselves without dumping loads of money into the game. If you’re anything like me, affording the Shard costs for many purchases is often out of the question, so this change is a great one that will make the game so much more accessible and enjoyable.
Legendary Shards Will See Their End With The Final Shape
While all these amazing changes to Destiny 2‘s economy and Legendary Shards will take place in phases, the transition will be complete by the time The Final Shape is released. The rest of the Legendary Shard sources and costs will be entirely eliminated, including Trials Passages, rituals, vendor purchases, and many more.

Bungie Leaving Gambit to Die Is a Destiny 2 Tragedy
Bungie isn’t offering veterans any currency exchange for their stockpiled Legendary Shards, so everyone will essentially start over from a clean slate. This is amazing news for many players, myself included. It won’t seem nearly as impossible to obtain what seemed so difficult in the past; veterans and casuals alike will have the same chances and opportunities in-game, and Destiny 2 will be an all-around better game, whether the veterans like it or not. It’s about time tryhards are put in their place and let the casuals have a chance.
