This War of Mine took the bleak, unforgiving survival genre and added some great twists to it. Survive as regular citizens during a brutal civil war. Stay alive when your worst dangers are the cold and starvation. Protect your children from the worst of it. And be careful about who you let play the guitar. Developer 11 Bit Studios is trying to recapture that same magic with their next upcoming game: Frostpunk. With Frostpunk, they claim that they want to demonstrate “what society is capable of when pushed to the limits.” Check out the teaser trailer below:

Looks suitably grim, yes? Frostpunk takes place in a totally frozen world where mankind relies on steam-powered technology to fight off the cold. It sounds somehow even grimmer than This War of Mine, with apocalyptic language like “What is culture when morality stands in the way of existence?” It sounds like Frostpunk will force you to make those decisions that exist in a morally gray zone, such as stealing from or hurting others in order to further your own survival.
There is not yet much to go on with how gameplay will work, but, judging from the trailer and the language being used, it will not be the type of game that will lift your spirits. We quite liked This War of Mine and its DLC expansion The Little Ones, so we will keep a close eye on Frostpunk here at The Nerd Stash. Until we know more, just “think about how survival may, in the end, leave us different beings.” That is one of the quandaries the developers intend to put before gamers. Frostpunk is scheduled to release sometime in 2017.
