Today, Disney released the full Encanto trailer. The trailer promises Disney’s signature energetic tone and colorful visuals with catchy music written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Encanto will be Miranda’s second collaboration with Disney, as he previously made songs for Moana. However, the film will mark a slight shift in tone, as this will be Disney’s first foray into magical realism.
The Encanto Trailer Reveals Its Central Conflict
While the original Encanto teaser introduced the characters and the tone, this full Encanto trailer reveals the central conflict and expands on the world. Encanto follows the Madrigal family, who live in a magical town located in the mountains of Colombia. Each family member has their own magical gift, except for Mirabel. As the family shows off feats of strength and the ability to talk to animals, Mirabel asks her mom why she’s the only one without a gift. However, when a dark force starts destroying the Madrigal home and sapping the magical power from each family member, Mirabel must rise to save her family – and her home.
Encanto Has a Stacked Cast and an Experienced Directorial Team
If the Encanto trailer is any indication, the film has the potential to become a staple in Disney’s post-renaissance era. Encanto is co-directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, with Bush also co-writing it. Howard directed other Disney hits like Zootopia and Tangled. This will be Bush’s second co-directed Disney film, as he previously worked on Zootopia with Rich Moore. The film’s cast includes Brooklyn-99 star Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel Madrigal. Also joining the cast are John Leguizamo, Diane Guerrero, Wilmer Valderrama, and Angie Cepeda. The film is written by Charise Castro Smith, who is making her film debut.
The Encanto trailer announces that the film will release on Thanksgiving. Encanto will have a 30 day exclusive run in theaters and will be available on Disney+ on Christmas Eve, 2021.
