Ever since the acquisition from Disney in 2013, Star Wars has had a much different look in the public eye. With more titles and movies being released than ever before, Lucasfilm has certainly taken a new direction forward. Yet, of the many projects Lucasfilm worked on before 2013 were ultimately scrapped such as their gaming division, Lucasfilm Games. Originally disbanded in 2013, the division’s subsequent projects were also canceled. The highly praised and hyped titles in development, Star Wars 1313 and First Assault ended development indefinitely. Seeing the success in their gaming avenues and existing brands, Disney is reopening the studio once more to attract more studios and branch out in their gaming department. Published in a blog post today on Starwars.com, they announced the studio’s return and published a new video reel focusing on their releases with EA since 2013.

From the looks of the announcement, it seems that Disney is more than likely preparing itself for more Star Wars titles down the road as the timeline for future releases comes sooner rather than later. When the studio originally closed in 2013, EA quickly capitalized on the opportunity to create Star Wars titles by locking down a 10 year deal with Disney. While the studio has made entertaining titles in the universe, fans have long since expressed their disdain for EA’s practices. Despite this, BioWare’s release of Star Wars: Fallen Order was critically acclaimed and certainly changed some minds about EA’s involvement with Star Wars. Yet, the 10-year deal doesn’t end for a few more years giving EA plenty of time to produce the rumored Battlefront 3. Despite some of Lucasfilm Games earlier projects not seeing the light of day, this new future for the company certainly begs the question of what’s next for Star Wars video games.
