Over ten years after the National Treasure sequel was released in theaters, Disney is revitalizing the franchise with a National Treasure series on Disney+. However, the Disney+ series will feature a new lead. According to a report from Deadline, the young actress, Lisette Alexis, has been cast in the National Treasure series’ lead role.
Disney+’s National Treasure series is being executive produced by several individuals who were involved with the movies. The executive producers include the movies’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer, the director Jon Turteltaub, and the writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley. The pilot for the show has been written by the Wibberleys and will be directed by the award-winning documentary director, Mira Nair. Production on the series is currently scheduled to begin in early 2022.
The series is set to expand the National Treasure franchise. It will follow the point of view of Alexis’ lead character, Jess. Though details are scarce, Jess is said to be a young, Latina immigrant in search of answers about her family. She has a natural talent for solving puzzles and loves mysteries. As the series unfolds, Jess will uncover the truth about the past and save a once lost Pan-American treasure.
As fans of the franchise know, the National Treasure movies were led by Nicolas Cage, who played the role of Benjamin Gates, a clever, crafty adventurer, and history lover. The movies followed Gates and his friends as they searched for treasures and solved mysteries regarding U.S. history. However, the Lisette Alexis-led National Treasure series is set to push beyond the treasures and mysteries of The United States and explore those from the Americas as a whole, both North and South.
