As a new era of Doctor Who dawns upon us, we will be seeing some old faces as well as new ones. Actress Jemma Redgrave will reprise her role of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Aneurin Barnard Doctor Who as a mysterious new character. This announcement was made on the Doctor Who Twitter page with a tweet reading, “UNIT returns! Jemma Redgrave returns as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, and UNIT, the long-running organization set on defending the Earth, returns in the next series of #DoctorWho. Aneurin Barnard also joins the series as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam.” Along with David Tennant and Catherine Tate, Redgrave will be the latest familiar face to return to Doctor Who. And with his acting resume, Barnard should make for an interesting addition to the show.
Jemma Redgrave Returns to ‘Doctor Who’ as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart
For those who need a Doctor Who refresher, Jemma Redgrave’s Kate Lethbridge-Stewart is the daughter of the classic Doctor Who character Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. Like her father, she is the leader of UNIT, an alien-defense organization that often has helped the Doctor in times of crisis. Redgrave has portrayed the character in different specials and episodes since season seven.
Aneurin Barnard Joins ‘Doctor Who’ Cast
Doctor Who’s new actor Aneurin Barnard has appeared in moves such as Dunkirk and The Goldfinch. He also appeared on Netflix’s Peaky Blinders. Most recently, he was part of the series 1899, which was canceled after one season despite critical praise. In a tweet, Barnard said he was part of the Doctor Who family “for a little while.” Barnard and Redgrave will likely both be part of the 60th Anniversary specials airing in November.
These specials will welcome back former Doctor actor David Tennant as well as his companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate). It will be a three-part event before Ncuti Gatwa takes over the role of the Doctor, with Millie Gibson as his companion Ruby Sunday.
