California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the State Threat Assessment Center to monitor threats after remarks by President Donald Trump. Trump made the comments during a Nebraska rally, naming Los Angeles and San Diego while discussing wartime costs. Newsom called the remarks dangerous and potentially treasonous, saying they placed a target on two major California cities.
The exchange began with Trump speaking at the rally about the war and higher prices. He called those costs “a small price to pay” for keeping the country and world safe. Trump then said, “Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego.”
He added that the conflict would end “very soon” and returned to gas and gasoline prices. In a separate social media post, Newsom said foreign actors could interpret Trump’s remarks as an invitation. He then directed the State Threat Assessment Center to “actively monitor the situation.”
Newsom said the concern involved Los Angeles, San Diego and one of America’s largest naval hubs.
Gavin Newsom Faces Backlash Over California Threat Monitoring Order
The response quickly divided over whether Newsom represented Trump’s remarks fairly and whether California’s monitoring response was warranted.
One response argued, “Donald Trump wasn’t inviting an attack on American soil.” Another accused Newsom directly: “And again, you’re lying about what Trump said and actually meant. And you know it.”
A separate user focused on context, writing, “As usual, you cherry-pick a couple of lines of a speech without context. You thrive on misleading your audience.” Another questioned the state response: “LOL. What is the State Threat Assessment Center going to monitor? X posts? Losers.”
Other reactions backed Newsom’s concern. One user wrote, “Trump should be on a terror watch list.” Another praised the governor, saying, “Our ‘Leader’. Thank you for the proper sanity Governor.”
California’s threat center will continue monitoring the situation under Newsom’s directive. The dispute over how Trump’s remarks should be interpreted remains unresolved.
