DOOM Eternal next-gen update
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information.

A free next-gen update for DOOM Eternal launches today for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, adding all manner of visual polish and a performance boost to the acclaimed 2020 high-energy first-person shooter.

As publisher Bethesda noted in a news wire published earlier this month, and as repeated during its recent E3 showcase, the next-gen update includes support for ray-tracing, 4K, and up to 120 FPS. Each console benefits from three new modes: a performance mode that favors high frame rates at a cost to resolution; a balanced mode that hits high-fidelity 4K at 60 FPS; and a ray-tracing mode with realistic lighting and reflections.

Additionally, the PC version of DOOM Eternal benefits from a slight update with the launch of next gen. Players can now play a new ray-tracing mode, suitable hardware allowing.

The update is 100% free for owners of DOOM Eternal of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC, both physical and digital copies. Bethesda notes that a 120 Hz compatible display is required for performance mode, while balanced mode necessitates a 4K compatible display.

Here’s the brand new trailer for the DOOM Eternal next-gen update for a taste of what’s in store.

DOOM Eternal Next-Gen Update Features

Here’s a full breakdown of the new DOOM Eternal next-gen modes on each platform alongside what resolution and frame rates players should expect. Note that ray tracing mode is unavailable for Xbox Series S players due to the console’s hardware limitations.

  • Balanced Mode: 2160p – 60 FPS
  • Ray Tracing Mode: 1800p – 60 FPS

Xbox Series S

  • Performance Mode: 1080p – 120 FPS
  • Balanced Mode: 1440p – 60 FPS
  • Ray Tracing Mode: Not Available

PlayStation 5

  • Performance Mode: 1584p – 120 FPS
  • Balanced Mode: 2160p – 60 FPS
  • Ray Tracing Mode: 1800p – 60 FPS

PC

  • Ray Tracing Mode: Availability and performance depends on a user’s PC hardware.

Once again, DOOM Eternal’s free next-gen update is out today for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.
