The cult ’90s video game Duke Nukem has been confirmed to return, but it will not be what fans expected. Production company Legendary Entertainment has signed a license rights agreement with Gearbox Software for a movie to be produced by the creators of the Netflix series Cobra Kai.
Duke Nukem is today an inseparable character in the history of video games. Appearing for the first time in the title of the same name in 1991, it is from Duke Nukem 3D that the bodybuilt anti-hero truly becomes a key figure in the FPS genre.
Which Duke Nukem Will Return as a Movie?
Duke Nukem, a game series dating back to 1991, has created confusion due to the games’ names released to date. Many players don’t even know which title came out later. However, it was a first-person shooter game that entertained and shocked the main character’s attitude and captivated with the gameplay.
We learn today (thanks to The Hollywood Reporter) that Legendary Entertainment, the Hollywood film studio behind the latest Godzilla films or the first part of Dune by Denis Villeneuve, will bring Duke Nukem’s adventures to the big screen. Legendary Entertainment acquired the rights from Gearbox to produce a film.
We also know that the project is supervised by the creators of Cobra Kai (Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg), the series anchored in the universe of Karate Kid.
In addition to the creative team, the film’s producer, Jean-Julien Baronnet, has also been announced – his production company, Marla Studios, specializes in video game films. At the moment, no director is linked to the making of the film, and no details on the plot have been provided.
This isn’t the first Duke Nukem movie adaptation we’ve heard about in Hollywood. In a previous attempt to bring Duke Nukem’s adventures to the big screen, John Cena would be the protagonist. However, this project was most likely placed on ice, and today’s report has nothing to do with it.
