Steam’s Free Weekend program is great way to try out some overlooked gems that you can then add to your massive catalog of games that you’ll “get to eventually.” This weekend, Steam has two really good ones on tap with the fantasy/strategy game Endless Legend and the tower defense/roguelike Dungeon of the Endless. Both games are from Amplitude studios, and both possess that key “one more round” aspect that the best insomnia-inducing games possess.
Dungeon of the Endless is a charming and brutally difficult tower defense game that puts you in the shoes of a ragtag group of ne’er-do-wells trying to escape from a wrecked spaceship. It is a game that gets surprisingly difficult in a hurry, and one that tasks you to be on your toes constantly, no matter how invincible your team appears to be. On wrong opening of a door and your game can be over quickly, practically forcing you to hit “New Game” as quickly as possible to make up for your dumb mistake.
Endless Legend is set after the ending of Dungeon of the Endless, although you need not have played one to play the other. It is a 4X grand strategy game in the tone of Civilization, although with a very unique and interesting art style and some design choices that significantly alter the way you approach strategy-conquest games. It is a great change of pace for those who are used to Civilization, and the totally different mythology and world draws you in very easily.
Both of these games are great options for some significant hours this weekend. The Nerd Stash’s own Sabine Algur called Dungeon of the Endless a “wonderful mix” of its genres and called it “extremely rewarding.” Give either or both games a shot through Sunday, and don’t be surprised if they both wind up in your permanent Steam library afterwards.
