Dungeons and Dragons have been riding a high since the super successful release of its 5th edition in 2014. More popular now than ever before, it’s also been able to spread out to other forms of media. There has already been the announcement of a new D&D movie in pre-production, which hopefully will be the first good one since it comes after 2014’s revival. And there has also been the announcement of seven to eight new video games in the works.
There are already some solid video games for Dungeons and Dragons. The Neverwinter MMO is a delight with continual new campaigns and quests to tackle along with special events, updates to customization options, and new worlds to explore. There is also a much simpler game called Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms, which provides click-based fun. And just this year, Baldur’s Gate was re-released.
But there was an exciting announcement at The Game Awards 2019. A new game called Dark Alliance is in the works, based upon characters from R. A. Salvatore’s The Legend of Drizzt novels, including Catti-brie and Bruenor. Shortly after was an exciting statement from Wizards of the Coast president Chris Cocks during an interview with Gameindustry.biz. He stated that there would be seven or eight brand new D&D video games coming out within the new few years.
“We want each game to have a point of view, and to really keep on just a couple of things and do it really, really well. What you don’t want to do is have every game in the franchise try to do the same thing, and try to do everything all at once. We want to open it up, open up the narrative possibilities, the character development, open up the level of problem-solving and combat opportunities, and thrills that players can be able to experience.”
At this point, a Baldur’s Gate III is in the works based around the 5th edition of Dungeons and Dragons. It’s also been revealed that Dark Alliance will be a third-person hack-and-slash game for PC and will feature both single-player and co-op modes.
