Extremely OK Games, the developer behind the acclaimed indie platformer Celeste, has revealed its next project, ‘2D explor-action game in a seamless pixel art world,’ Earthblade. ‘Reveal’ may be stretching it a bit. As Extremely OK describes, this is more of a ‘vibe reveal‘ than a genuine announcement, simply featuring the game’s name, a teaser poster, and an accompanying soundtrack snippet posted to Twitter.

Other than that, we know very little about what Earthblade is all about. This is by design as Extremely OK doesn’t want to reveal much about the game quite yet. The developer warns that there’s quite a wait in-store before fans will have something substantial to sink their teeth into.

“We’ve debated back and forth how to talk about this game during development,” says Extremely OK games about Earthblade. “While making Celeste, we basically tweeted out whatever interesting-looking thing we were working on day-to-day, when we were in the mood for sharing. But an air of mystery lends itself particularly well to this project, so we’ve opted to save it all up for a big reveal that will hopefully blow your socks off.”

Earthblade Release Window

The developer explains that since the release of Celeste over three years ago, it’s been through three prototypes before settling on Earthblade. As for a release date, the Celeste developer is keeping its cards close to the chest, proffering up a vague ’20XX’ launch.

“It sounds optimistic to say out loud that Earthblade could be released within 5 short years of Celeste. The truth is that we don’t know how long it will take, just that it will take as long as it takes (and that it will take a long time).”

In the meantime, curious little details pepper the Earthblade ‘vibe reveal’ poster, which may provide some clues. A shadowy figure holds an iridescent sword—an air balloon darts across the skies. Distant monolithic structures loom. And what looks like a giant crow perched on a pillar housing a glowing gem.

Are you a fan of the Celeste game? Earthblade might be the next game for you. Let me know in the comments below!
