All Monsters Featured in The Witcher Season 3, Volume 1
The chilling journey through The Witcher Season 3, Volume 1 has brought five terrifying creatures: the elusive Jackapace, the grotesque Flesh Monster, and formidable beasts, Wyvern, Aeschna, and Werwolf, while we also witnessed the brief appearance of the notorious spectral knights of the Wild Hunt.
Jackapace
The Witcher season 3 introduces a never-before-seen creature called the Jackapace. The creature is exclusively created for the Netflix TV series. In the first episode, Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri encounter this unsettling beast during a party orchestrated by the fire mage Rience. The Jackapace, resembling an enormous armadillo with protective armored plates, exhibits a unique ability to curl up into a ball and roll for swift movement.
Though lacking sight, it compensates with an acute sense of smell, making it a formidable tracker. The show hints at the Jackapace’s connection to a war between humans and elves. According to its lore, it was bred to hunt down the elves. Utilizing Ciri’s blood, Rience attempts to employ the Jackapace’s tracking prowess. However, Geralt and Yennefer intervene, ultimately defeating the fearsome creature.
Flesh Monster
In episode 2 of The Witcher season 3, viewers are confronted with one of the most horrifying and gruesome creatures in the entire series—the Flesh Monster. This abomination is the result of twisted experiments conducted on several young sorceresses from Aretuza. Geralt stumbles upon the Flesh Monster while investigating an underground cavern beneath a castle. This is where the fire mage Rience had taken refuge.
Inside the cavern, Geralt discovers the disembodied heads of the sorceresses. The sorceress’s mind is connected to the writhing mass of arms, legs, and torsos that make up the Flesh Monster. As Geralt engages in a desperate battle, he strikes blow after blow, causing each sorceress’s head to perish along with the creature’s composite bodies.
Similar to Jackapace, the Flesh Monster is exclusive to the Netflix show.
Otto the Werewolf
In the intense events of The Witcher season 3, episode 3, Geralt’s path crosses with Otto. He is an old friend who has been living with Anika, a druid and friend of Geralt’s mother. However, a werewolf attacked Otto during the plague of ’21 when he fled into the wilderness to avoid infecting other villagers with the plague. Geralt was then hired to kill him. However, he found a different solution. He provides Otto with a medallion that prevents him from transforming into a monstrous creature.
However, when Theryn unexpectedly awakens and falls into a trance, she attacks Anika and Geralt. In the chaos that ensued, Theryn succeeded in removing the medallion from Otto. As a result, Otto begins to transform. In a desperate struggle, Geralt retrieves the medallion and returns it to Otto, preventing his full transformation.
Wyvern
Wyverns are well-known creatures within The Witcher universe, featured in both books and video games. These endangered creatures possess snake-like necks, venomous trident-tipped tails, dark scales, and wings. Unlike dragons, wyverns lack the ability to breathe fire but rely on their tail stingers and aerial agility to capture and carry off prey.
In the third episode of The Witcher season 3, Ciri ends up at a sideshow where a showman tries to sell a wyvern as a basilisk. As Ciri knows how both beasts look, she quickly exposes the charlatan and his masquerade. The Wyvern is then freed from the cage. While Geralt does not engage in a fight with the wyvern, Ciri bravely battles the baby beast, ultimately killing it.
Aeschna
In the fourth episode of The Witcher season 3, Geralt and Ciri find themselves facing off against an Aeschna, a formidable monster that dwells in the water.
Aeschnae were once a subject of debate among scholars in The Witcher world. However, these monsters thrived in the polluted waters of the Pontar Delta. Years later, they have grown in numbers and size enough to snatch both people and livestock from passing ships.
To secure passage on a ferry, Geralt and Ciri strike a deal to protect the vessel from any Aeschna attacks. While in the books, Aeschnae resembles praying mantises, the TV adaptation portrays them as oversized and mutated newts or salamanders.
During their journey to Thanedd Island, Ciri and Geralt encounter an Aeschna after it was drawn to the ship by the music played by Valdo Marx and his troupe. With their combined efforts, they successfully defeat the aeschna, preventing any fatalities among the boat’s passengers, although some were injured.
Aeschnae, also known as glustyworps, are featured in both The Witcher books and video games.
