The galaxy far, far away just keeps growing. According to a report from Deadline, Ewan McGregor is in talks to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in his own series for the Disney+ streaming service. The service would then have three Star Wars shows in various stages of development. Disney+ will launch with Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian on November 12th. There’s also an unnamed Cassian Andor series that will see Diego Luna return as the character.
Some form of Obi-Wan spin-off has been in the pipeline at Disney for a while now. Originally, it was thought to be a feature film. But Disney decided that Star Wars movies would release less frequently given the disappointing returns of 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Considering that there are two more film trilogies planned, that’s probably a good idea. There will be one from Rian Johnson and another from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. In February, a rumor surfaced that this project had morphed into a series for Disney+. As it turns out, that was true.
This is just the next step in seeing Ewan McGregor return as the character. He was a definite highlight in the underwhelming Star Wars prequel trilogy. But he expresses interest in reprising the role whenever he gets the chance. At the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2015, he told the Daily Record he’d love to fill in Obi-Wan’s gap between Episodes III and IV. The prospect looked to be more certain before the release of Solo. During the 2018 Golden Globes, McGregor stated:
“There’s a lot of talk, and I’d be happy to play him again, but I don’t know anything more than you do.”
There’s no doubt that fans would love to see more on the famous Jedi. Given this report, McGregor’s eagerness to return, and how iconic the character is, it may be safe to say that the series will move into development soon.
