Completing Far Cry 6 checkpoints is vital to freeing Yara from Anton Castillo. To progress in the game, you must capture these locations across Yara. While the process doesn’t take long, it can be challenging for those jumping into the game for the first time. If you’re struggling with that, we will show you some of the best ways to capture checkpoints in Far Cry 6.

(Updated on August 1, 2024 – Fact-checked and fixed inconsistencies).

Capturing a Checkpoint in Far Cry 6

Checkpoints will become available early in the game, shortly after you meet Juan Cortez. In order to capture a checkpoint, you need to kill all of the soldiers guarding it. Once you have killed the soldiers, you will need to destroy the Anton Castillo billboard that each checkpoint has. The best way to destroy the billboard is by shooting the oil drum next to it until it explodes. Once you have destroyed the billboard the checkpoint will turn over to Guerilla control.

There are a few different methods for capturing a checkpoint. It’s best to play around with the different styles to find one that suits you but here are some to start with. Personally, we prefer going down the stealthy road, so we’ll show you what our process is.

The Stealth Method

There are two main ways to capture a checkpoint in Far Cry 6. Stealth or guns blazing. We’ll go with the former as it is the ideal way that, while lengthy, lets you control how you approach enemies and how they approach you. When trying to capture a checkpoint in a stealthy manner, you’re going to want to make sure you follow a few key rules. First, try to machete any foes that you can from behind. This will take them out quickly and quietly without alerting the others at the checkpoint.

Secondly, be aware of booby traps. Enemies will often have a booby trap near them, which means even if you take them out quietly with the machete, you will still set off the trap and alert the rest of the Soldados. Finally, leave Guapo behind! Bringing a man-eating alligator with you on a stealth mission may sound like an obvious tip, but it’s easy to forget that he is following you. Simply leave him behind a little bit away from the checkpoint to make sure he doesn’t devour anyone and alert the whole army.
