Season 2 of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is far from over, and after the debut of two superb fighters, a third one is finally joining the fray, and this one might be one of my favorites. If you’re unsure about who I’m talking about, it is none other than Blue Mary, who has finally made her way to the modern Fatal Fury stage and has brought several beginner-friendly moves, albeit with some risk behind them. Even if she lacks a few things, I do believe she’s one of the best Season 2 additions for new players, but also one of the toughest fighters in the right hands.
An S-Class Fighter

I’ve been doing several previews of characters coming to Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, and while I’ve loved the two most recent ones, with Nightmare Geese being among the best, the truth is that Blue Mary seems even more approachable for all players, without losing those in-depth fighting techniques.
In terms of difficulty and combo variety, I’d say she’s below Nightmare Geese. The boss-turned-playable-character brought several move combinations that rewarded high player skill to make Geese shine. Blue Mary, on the other hand, is one of the easiest characters to learn, as her moves aren’t particularly difficult to execute, yet she still requires almost perfect timing to make her shine in combat.
Blue Mary is all about grappling moves, which shouldn’t be a surprise, as she’s known as the “Joint Crusher” around South Town. Most of her moves are performed in close quarters, with only a few gap closers here and there. Yet, where Blue Mary really shines is in her defensive capabilities, as most of her moves revolve around perfecting counters.
As someone who’s used to a more hybrid playstyle with characters having mid-range and close-quarter options, I actually enjoyed how Blue Mary leans more into an “in your face” type of style. Almost every combo will put opponents in a chokehold, dealing a lot of damage and not really letting other fighters do anything. That said, my favorite thing was how many of her moves, specials included, focused on countering enemies. Some of them even let you counter aerial moves with a deadly grapple.
However, much like other fighters, she comes with a few downsides, such as fewer combo options, a bit of repetitive gameplay, and her offense being a bit harder to pull off, as some opponents won’t struggle to keep her at bay. Still, she’s an excellent character for new players trying to practice their close-quarter moves and get the grasp of the timing of counters.
The Joint Crusher Has Arrived

Overall, Blue Mary is easily one of my favorite characters in Season 2 of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, thanks to how technical and precise her gameplay is, yet not so overwhelming that new players can’t try her out for a couple of rounds. So far, I’ve been loving the gameplay variety of all these new fighters in Season 2, and I can’t wait to see how the next ones perform. It’s rare for post-launch content in a fighting game to feel this balanced — respecting existing characters while still letting new ones shine — and in that regard, City of the Wolves continues to excel.
