The very first gameplay footage for Dragon Quest Builders‘s Nintendo Switch port surfaced on September 24 at the Tokyo Game Show. There’s about forty-five minutes of content shown, including conversations about the game (which are, of course, in Japanese so we have no idea what they’re saying). Though the game is already available on PS4 and PS Vita, the Switch version will include an Great Sabrecub companion monster not seen in the other versions. The cub makes traveling and fighting much easier, plus there’s one more bonus to discover.

The first gameplay segment starts at 9:50 and centers around the player constructing a simple house and completing a request for the village girl. There’s some light combat, which in Dragon Quest Builders is conducted in real-time. Segment two begins at 19:15, and here we see the Sabrecub. You can ride it, it runs very fast, can double-jump, and stomp and slash enemies for large amounts of damage. The only downside seems to be that you cannot use teleportals while riding it, but it will at least follow you through them. Oh, and that bonus? By stomping enemies, you get items that will create pixelated sprites that can be placed in the world just like regular blocks.
Keep watching and you’ll see a teaser for Dragon Quest Builders 2. In the sequel, you can team up with three other players, swim underwater and even glide through the air Breath of the Wild style. Judging by the title promo, it also looks like players will have the option to choose a female protagonist. The Switch port of Dragon Quest Builders will land in spring of 2018. A release date for the sequel has not been confirmed, but it will come to PS4 and Nintendo Switch whenever it arrives.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m suddenly in the mood for a puff-puff.
