Since the teaser post-credit sequence of Avengers: Infinity War, fans have been enthusiastically hypothesizing about what direction Marvel would be taking Captain Marvel and what role she would play in the overarching Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, it looks as though you may have to wait a little longer to find out because President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, has claimed that promotional material for Carol Danvers’ inaugural film outing is a long way off.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Feige said that “they’re still figuring it out”, continuing,

“I think there’s still a few months on it. You already know as much as you need to. We’ve got Skrulls, we’ve got the Kree, it takes place in the 90s, you have Sam Jackson with two eyes and Carol Danvers, a unique telling of Carol Danvers origin story. We are about two weeks out from completion of principal photography.”

While Feige is essentially repeating what we already know about the film (which is due for release on March 8, 2019 in the United States), he did add that Captain Marvel’s role in the MCU would “very important, very important”, while enthusing about the potential stories for future Marvel films:

“I mean, all of the things you’ve seen throughout Phases 1 and 2 and now through much of 3, the new characters always are important going forward in driving, shaping the future of the MCU. I think it would be amazing, another 10 years; another 20 films or so. We only focus on one step at a time but that’s all about continuing to surprise with the stories, go unexpected places, continue to play with new, fresh, unexpected genres and then introduce characters that people might have heard of or a beloved big fan base like Captain Marvel or characters like Guardians where before we made that, people had never even heard of them.”

Indeed, The Guardians of the Galaxy was a risk for Disney and Marvel, given that the characters were relatively unknown compared to the heavyweights such as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Spider-Man. But it ultimately paid off with the first film garnering a majority of warm critical reception alongside a worldwide Box Office total of $773.3 million – which made it the third highest-grossing MCU film at the time of its release in 2014, behind The Avengers and Iron Man 3.

Given her similar obscurity when compared to the aforementioned Marvel heroes, Captain Marvel (played by Brie Larson) may very well face the same challenges as Peter Quill’s band of misfits. We will have to wait until early 2019 to find out if she can overcome them.

Are you excited for Captain Marvel? Do you think it will be another hit for the MCU? Comment away and let us know your thoughts!
