Horror continues to dominate the box office during the pandemic era. Five Nights at Freddy’s has become the highest-grossing movie from Blumhouse after reaching $295 million at the box office. This has dethroned the studio’s previous heavy-hitters like Split, Halloween, and Get Out. The film had a strong start when it was released on October 27. Its $130 million global opening skyrocketed projections and made its money back after its $20-25 million budget.

Five Nights at Freddy’s Can’t Stop Breaking Box Office Records After Becoming the Highest-Grossing Movie in Blumhouse History

FNAF is the BIGGEST @blumhouse film of ALL-TIME. Just passed SPLIT. thanks to Emma Tammi, Scott Cawthon, cast & the New Orleans crew, the Henson team, & our partners @universalpics & @peacock.  @jhutch1992, @matthewlillard, @Piperrubios, @elizethdlail

The record was announced to be broken by the founder of Blumhouse, Jason Blum. The producer congratulated the people involved, including star Matthew Lillar and director Emma Tammi.

Blumhouse has been a powerhouse of a studio, largely due to horror movies like Five Nights at Freddy’s. The adaptation of the video game of the same name tops movies like Split ($278 million), Halloween ($255 million), Get Out ($252 million), Glass ($246 million), and Paranormal Activity 3 ($207 million). Among those other successes this year are M3GAN ($181 million), which has a sequel in the making, and Insidious: The Red Door ($186 million).

The film has broken multiple records upon its October release. It had the biggest Thursday previews for a horror film this year, as it grossed $10.3 million. Its opening weekend became the best for a woman-directed horror film as the previous holder of this record was Nia DaCosta for Candyman. Five Nights at Freddy’s also had the best opening weekend for Blumhouse, setting it up for its latest milestone of becoming the studio’s biggest film.

Due to smaller budgets and the communal theatrical experience, horror movies have found great success after the theaters opened back up following the first waves of COVID-19. This year alone, we have had hits like Scream 6, Thanksgiving, and Evil Dead Rise.
