There are many essential things you’ll need in Enshrouded, but the most important one is, hands down, your Flame Altar. This buildable object will allow you to make a base around it, fast travel, survive the most dangerous parts of the map, and more. But since there are a lot of things you need to get to make it work properly, here is a quick guide on how the Flame Altar works in Enshrouded.
Note: This guide has been updated for Enshrouded 1.0.
How to Upgrade Your Flame Altar in Enshrouded

As soon as you build your first Flame Altar in Enshrouded, you’ll notice there are several options, two of which are the most important: upgrading the Altar and strengthening the Flame.
The first option lets you increase your Altar’s level, which basically lets you get a bigger building area. For instance, your starting Flame Altar only has a buildable area of 40 m x 40 m x 40 m. However, if you upgrade it, you’ll get an extra 40 m, and so on. One important thing to keep in mind is that Flame Altar upgrades are local to each Altar. That means that if you want to build huge bases in different biomes, you need to upgrade each Altar separately. Here’s the list of items you need for every upgrade:
| Altar Level | Materials |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | Unlocked at the start |
| Level 2 | 1 Shroud Core |
| Level 3 | 5 Shroud Cores |
| Level 4 | 5 Shroud Nexus |
Keep in mind that upgrading each Flame Altar takes time, since most of these materials must be crafted. The good news is that, at least for the base-building aficionados, Enshrouded 1.0 has increased the Flame Altar limit to 15, meaning you can set up bases in several biomes now.
Strengthening the Flame

The second big option is the ability to Strengthen the Flame, which, contrary to the above one, works globally. Once you upgrade your Flame, each Flame Altar you create will spawn at that Flame level, which is quite useful as it reduces the grinding and makes exploration faster.
If you want a deeper guide on all the materials you need for the Flame, you can check this guide, which also covers how to get through the Deadly Shroud.
Lastly, you can also respec your skills at the Flame Altar as well as remove the water from your base, in case any strange accident happened while building. The former costs Runes, so if you want to try a different build, make sure to save up some of that currency.
