Many of us know that whatever plans a political figure has for citizens will always face some backlash, for one thing or another. However, there are cases where certain plans face so much backlash that they look extremely questionable. This is the case with what happened recently regarding Governor DeSantis’s redistricting plan, which has several Florida citizens worried. This new plan aims to give four more seats in Congress to Republicans, and several residents believe this is a terrible plan that will likely backfire, and some even mention that it borders on the unconstitutional.
The original note comes from the Tampa Bay Times, which reported that Governor DeSantis is looking to give four congressional seats to GOP members. This sounded a few alarms among some Florida residents, as out of the 28 seats, only four would be for Democrats, making the division quite uneven, especially for the latter party.
Another concern among Florida residents is that the state has banned gerrymandering, which could render this redistricting plan unconstitutional, at least according to several Redditors who disagree with DeSantis’s latest plan.
As you can imagine, this news sparked outrage, with several people furious, claiming DeSantis is going against state laws and that this looks like favoritism, especially ahead of the mid-term elections.
Florida Residents React to DeSantis’s Redistricting Plan
Several Redditors took it to the comments to share their thoughts on DeSantis’s latest endeavor, with many calling it a terrible idea that could backfire soon.
“I think it’s going to backfire. He’s thinning out red areas to encompass blue areas, but there are independents who are sick and tired of Republicans, as well as many Republicans who will just stay home.“
Many others went further, accusing Governor DeSantis of violating the Constitution and many laws the state had already established to prevent what he’s trying to do.
“It’s against the Florida Constitution to redistrict based on political parties.“
“Isn’t this illegal, per Florida’s constitution?“
In the end, this hasn’t happened yet, as there still needs to be a vote on the redistricting plan. However, many are worried that if people vote for this, it will hurt the whole state and set a terrible precedent in which certain political figures choose to ignore state laws to favor a specific political party. But, as many say, we’ll have to wait and see what the outcome of this plan is in the coming weeks.
