A Florida mom is under fire after telling her teenager repeatedly to “figure it out” when she asked for help moving out for the first time. Many in the comments are calling her a bully and a bad parent. One TikToker’s video has over 288,000 views and over 36,000 likes.

In the video, the Florida mom rants about how her daughter (who is 17) wants to move out because she “can do adult things and she can live on her own.” However, when her daughter came to her with a dorm apartment that she liked and asked for help, she told her, “You’re an adult, figure it out.” Following this, her daughter found a waitlist for the fall 2027 semester, and then asked what she should say when she calls. However, she was told, “Adults know what to do when they’re going to move out and live somewhere, so figure it out.” The mom described it as a “teachable moment.” This wasn’t well received by viewers. The original video has over 8.5 million views, over 494,000 likes, and over 39,000 comments.

#greenscreen like I don’t understand how you don’t see the problem here and how you’re approaching things? Teenagers are training to be young adults. And even young adults still need help. You can be independent and still need help to figure out how to become independent Parents should be teaching their teenagers how to be independent #independence#parentingteens#teenagers#parenting

The backlash to her advice has been largely negative. One TikToker posted a response, calling the parent out for not being willing to help her child. She says, “I can definitely see why her seventeen-year-old daughter wants to move out immediately.” The woman views the video as an example of why the daughter wants to leave. Additionally, she argues that it’s the job of a parent to guide their children into adulthood. She explains, “It looks like you have plenty of real-world advice that you could be giving her and instead you are shaming your daughter for asking [a] question [about] moving out.”

Backlash Over Florida Mom’s ‘Advice’

Many people commented on the original video, asking why she wouldn’t just help her child and calling her a bad parent. One comment reads, “Her reasoning for wanting to move out became clear so fast.” Another draws from real-life experience: “My dad was like this. We hardly speak now. So enjoy looking forward to that.” The TikToker shares a similar perspective and says, “I can only imagine how insufferable you are to live with.”

Others view her advice as unnecessary and just a way to be mean to her child. One person says, “I hate when parents set their kids up for failure. Why can’t you just help her instead of being cruel?” Another commenter says, “It’s not a teachable moment if you’re not teaching her anything and you’re just telling her to figure it out.” Another adds, “Her patronizing tone makes me want to scream.”

The Florida mom has seen the comments and posted a response, claiming she isn’t there to be a friend to her daughter and that she’s teaching her how to stand on her own two feet. This also received backlash.
