When it comes to school, good parents want the best for their kids. And sometimes they’ll pay out the nose just to attend private schools. However, one Florida father is second-guessing his decision of sending his child to a private school, due to all the sudden hidden fees.
TikTok user _rad_alien, goes into great detail of his son’s “private school,” which he feels has “got to be a scam.” According to him, he and his wife pay $2,000 a month for his tuition. He says he thinks they get away with it just because they’re a private school and they don’t work the same way as tuition-free public options. Not only do they pay that for the months he’s in school, but they also pay it during the summer when he’s not in school.
But they quickly found out that $2,000 a month is just the start of it! He adds they also have to “pay $150 a month for school supplies.” They could buy cheaper supplies, but the school requires them to buy “specific” supplies from a single supplier, likely one with which they have a contract. Then, they discovered that the $2,000 a month only covers four core classes.
Past that, they’re expected to pay another fee for each class. For example, his son’s music teacher conducts her class off-campus. Rad Alien says they have to pick him up at school every single day to shuttle him there. As he says, “All for the low price of $300.”
At the end of the video, Rad Alien drops the act and comes clean: it wasn’t about private schools at all, but an analogy. Instead, it was “about healthcare.” And any talk of buying supplies and monthly costs was actually what they spent on medical bills for his son. The $150 for school supplies, for example? That’s the cost of his son’s prescription.
People online were slow to realize Rad Alien’s true message
Those who stuck through the video were enlightened to Rad Alien’s sneaky trick. Others who didn’t continue commenting about private schools. “We can tell if you comment before the end,” one user wrote. Naturally, the comments were a mix of hating or loving private schools, while others knew the truth.
Although Rad Alien’s talk of buying school supplies was a lie, a parent claimed that actually happened to them. “It was just the administration assistant ordering stuff off Alibaba,” they wrote. Rad Alien replied, “Omg, I made that up thinking it was absurd enough to be compared to our healthcare system.”
Those who did understand what Rad Alien was trying to do shared their medical horror stories. One user said they were paying $800 a month, plus their copay was another “$2500 a month.”
Another TikTok user further opened up the conversation on predatory practices, saying, “Public libraries are the only non-scam we have going for us.” Though it took some people a bit to wise up to Rad Alien’s trick, people were good sports about it.
