The official trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore has been released. This comes just three days after a short teaser was released promising that the full trailer would be released today.
The trailer for he film opens with a brief glimpse of the familiar face of Michael Gambon’s Albus Dumbledore before flashing back to a younger version of the character played by Jude Law. Law’s Dumbledore is the character viewers will see at the center of the story, which according to Deadline is set several years after the events of The Crimes of Grindelwald, the previous entry into the Fantastic Beasts series. In this film, Dumbledore enlists the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his team in the battle against Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelson). In the trailer, we hear Dumbledore describe the unconventional team that is taking on the most dangerous wizard in over a century, which consists of “a magizoologist, his indispensable assistant, a wizard descended from a very old family, a school teacher, and a muggle.” Certain parts of the Harry Potter series are alluded to in the trailer, including the appearance of a golden snitch and the team finding the room of requirement. We also see a muggle character entrusted with magic as Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) is handed a wand by Newt at Dumbledore’s request.
Along with Law and Redmayne, several other actors from the Fantastic Beasts series are reprising their roles, including Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone, Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, and Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein. This film will mark the first appearance of Mikkelson as Grindelwald, a role previously played by Johnny Depp. Variety says that Warner Bros. asked for Depp’s departure last year when he lost a libel case against a British tabloid that alleged he was a “wife-beater.”
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is the third of five films for the Fantastic Beasts series. It will be released on April 15, 2022.
