Game of Thrones creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, have struck an exclusivity deal with Netflix.
This news comes from Variety, who had the opportunity to speak to Netflix and confirm the news directly.
In a statement from the streaming service’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos, he said:
โWe are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix…They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We canโt wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.โ
Netflix could be an excellent platform for the pair. They have the opportunity to explore their creative visions with the service with a level of freedom. This is assisted by the fact that, according to the article:
โThe deal is a multi-year agreement to write, produce and direct new TV series and films exclusively at Netflix.โ
How Do They Feel About this Netflix Deal?
The creative duo also released a joint statement on the matter:
โWeโve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and weโre grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home...Over the past few months weโve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber. We remember the same shots from the same โ80s movies; we love the same books; weโre excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and weโre honored they invited us to join them.โ
The statement suggests that they may be in the process of adapting a new book or even an 80’s style movie. Only time will tell as they develop their work for Netflix.
Alongside this, Benioff and Weiss are developing a new Star Wars film for a 2022 release. This is the first of several films in the franchise the pair have signed up to write and produce for Lucasfilm.
Ultimately, it is a rather exciting time as we wait for what the pair will come up with next.
