There’s no shortage of stunning places you can visit and things to do in Genshin Impact. One of those is Apam Woods in Sumeru. The well-sized location is filled with water, but that can quickly change, giving you more exploration options, if you learn how to adapt the weather. It’s part of a questline so you can’t miss it. When you know how to change the weather in Apam Woods, you’ll lower the water level and also score a unique Genshin Impact achievement.
Change Weather in Apam Woods – Unlock Guide
[Updated July 18, 2024 – added further information about the quests needed to access the Varuna Contraption and info on lowering water levels]
Before you can think about playing with the weather, you’ll first have to complete the “Dream Nursery” quest. This is part of the World Quest “The World of Aranara” series “Aranyaka: Part II.” With that Genshin Impact quest completed, you’re one step closer to changing the weather in Apam Woods.
From there, you’ll start the “Varuna Gatha” World Quest series. You must complete the series in its entirety. So, once you conclude “A Prayer for Rain on the Fecund Land,” you’ve reached the point where you can finally manipulate the weather in Genshin Impact. You’ll use the Varuna Contraption to change the weather. There are multiple Contraptions. The image below is where you’ll wind up after the quest, so you won’t have to go far to find it:

At the Contraption, you’ll first have to play the notes indicated with the Vintage Lyre. The first four notes are found on the first line. You’ll need to go to the second line for the final note. Once unlocked, you have three options:
- Rainy
- Sunny
- Circulate
How To Lower Water Level with Varuna Contraption
If you want to explore the Apam Woods more in Genshin Impact, you’ll want to lower the water level. To do so, you’ll do the opposite of what feels right. This means getting lower water levels means turning the weather Rainy. It seems contradictory, but this is the way it works. For higher levels, turn it Sunny. Circulate will simply adjust between the two.
The most work you’ll do to change the weather in Apam Woods is completing those quests in Genshin Impact. Afterward, it’s smooth sailing toward a unique achievement.
