Hearing about law enforcement doing some shady things isn’t new in today’s modern day, but that didn’t make one Georgia resident’s interaction with an officer any less concerning. Reddit user Stephhhhht posted their story on r/legaladvice, explaining the rather bizarre incident that occurred following an alleged raid on their home. During the search, one of the officers took their phone; the next day, this same cop “demanded the owner meet behind a gas station to return it.”
Steph says they ended up going through with the meetup and got their phone back. Still, they claim “the whole interaction felt extremely strange and unprofessional.” It began with the officer handing over the phone, apologizing for the raid, and then giving a 20-minute lecture. It’s hard to blame Steph for feeling very confused after all this, and plenty of Redditors concluded that the situation was all too suspicious.
“This is, to put it lightly, highly unusual,” remarked a commenter, who accused the officer of wrongfully seizing the phone without a warrant, resulting in the whole gas-station meetup. “It sounds like Mr. Policeman broke the chain of evidence,” added another. “They put spying software on your phone,” wrote a third.
Reddit Accused the Georgia Officer of Tampering with OP’s phone
Many people believed the Georgia cop likely did something to Steph’s phone, presumably to extract more information or evidence. However, OP did say they looked over the warrant, and “there is nothing about searching my cell phone.” Still, plenty of Redditors strongly urge Steph to get a new phone ASAP and change passwords for every account they have.
Even though there’s no proof the policeman tampered with OP’s phone, one assumption still stands strong. As a user expressed, “They did something illegal that they couldn’t hand it back to you officially at the police station.”
As to whether Steph has an attorney to help them with this, they responded, saying that they “mentioned it to my public defender but they seemed more concerned with a plea deal.” While OP has yet to update those following the post on what they’ve decided to do, one mystery has piqued the interest of a handful of Redditors: “what the lecture was all about?”
What an officer would say to someone after allegedly giving back their phone behind a gas station and apologizing for a raid is anyone’s guess. But the fact that Steph says they were back there for 20 minutes listening to the cop is curiously concerning.
