The 2020 action-adventure game Ghost of Tsushima has officially hit 8 million sales. This latest achievement comes after the open-world samurai game sold more than 5 million copies by November 2020. The news was announced by Sony at CES 2022, as well as by the game’s developer, Sucker Punch, on Twitter. Check out the tweet below where the company thanks its many fans.

We're thrilled and amazed that #GhostOfTsushima has officially sold more than 8 million copies!

Reaching 8 million sales is incredibly impressive for a new IP such as Ghost of Tsushima. The PlayStation exclusive was Sucker Punch’s first game since their popular Infamous franchise.

Ghost of Tsushima was originally released on July 17, 2020, exclusively for the PS4, with a Director’s Cut released on the PS4 and PS5 on August 20, 2021. The game follows Jin Sakai, a samurai who is on a quest to protect Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan. Ghost of Tsushima is played from a third-person perspective and features an open world. Players are able to travel to different parts of the island on horseback while they complete multiple side-quests and converse with a myriad of unique NPCs.

The success of the game has also led to a movie adaptation getting the green light. On March 25, 2021, Deadline reported that Sony and PlayStation productions had a Ghost of Tsushima film in the works with John Wick’s Chad Stahelski set to direct. There aren’t currently many details on the upcoming film, but the report said the plot “centers around samurai warrior Jin Sakai, the last surviving member of his clan, who must set aside the traditions that have shaped him as a warrior to wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.”

A post from The PlayStation Blog confirmed the movie will document Jin’s “tense transformation into the Ghost from a whole new vantage point.” As the game has clearly taken a lot from past Samurai films, with its Kurosawa mode for example, it’s exciting to see Jin get his very own film. Keep an eye out for more details on the movie as production progresses.
