Bring your coats and proton packs. The first trailer of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was released by Sony today, the sequel to Afterlife (seen below). From the footage, we get that typical fun tone we would expect, but the story looks to be darker and deadlier than previous films. Co-writer of the 2021 movie, Gil Kenan, takes his spot in the director’s chair with a script he co-wrote with Afterlife director Jason Reitman.
The previous film stepped into a rural town in Oklahoma but is going back to its roots in New York City. During the middle of the summer, the city turns to ice as countless people are frozen to death. The new and old-school Ghostbusters must team up to defeat what could be the deadliest spirit yet.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Trailer Gets Chilly and Deadly
The cast is split between OG cast members, the cast of Afterlife, and some newcomers. Returning stars from the 2021 film include Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Sigourney Weaver come back to further connect the film to its roots. New additions include Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjiani.
The franchise has had its ups and downs. The 2016 reboot flopped, leading to a gap until the 2021 movie that connected to the original movies. Afterlife made $204 million off its $75 million budget. It was enough for the studio as the unnamed sequel was greenlit, which was unveiled officially with the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire trailer, as we previously did not have the title.
The distance the trailer of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has between its release date could prove useful. For now, actors cannot promote the film due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. The studios have had difficulty meeting the union’s needs, particularly when replacing performers with AI replicas and other uses with controversial technology. If a deal gets struck before March, we will see the cast share and promote their work in the film.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will be released on Easter weekend, March 29, 2024.
