A good romantic comedy scratches an itch that rarely gets scratched anymore. Gina Rodriguez’s latest movie, a rom-com on Netflix called Players, is currently the number one film on the streaming service. While it was released on Valentine’s Day, it has climbed to the number one slot to dethrone Despicable Me 3. and Lover, Stalker, Killer.

The leading star plays as Mack, a New York sportswriter with skills in scoring hookups. Things don’t go according to plan as she unexpectedly falls harder than expected for her latest target, Nick (Tom Ellis). The film also stars Augustus Prew, Liza Koshy, Damon Wayans Jr., Joel Courtney, Ego Nwodim, Marin Hinkle, and Sarah Dacey-Charles. Netflix’s Players was directed by Pitch Perfect 3 director Trish Sie and written by Daredevil and Ozark writer Whit Anderson.

Rom-Com Players Is Netflix’s Current Big Hit as Gina Rodriguez Finds Love

Yesterday, Players was not in the top ten movies on Netflix. From Flix Patrol, the film climbs over its previous top performers to take on the number one spot. Today, it goes down from the sports-centered rom-com to Despicable Me 3, Love, Stalker, Killer, Despicable Me 2, Kill Me If You Dare, The Devil Wears Prada, Minions, Ashes, Despicable Me, and Bhakshak.

The genre is currently taking over the streaming service across all fronts. Its top series since earlier this week has been One Day, a limited series that follows two college graduates as they meet once a year and slowly develop a deep relationship. The rom-com took over from Griselda, the drug cartel series starring Sofia Vergara.
