Fans might be waiting to see Loki take a step beyond the Nine Realms, but that’s not the direction Sony is taking — at least for now. As the last presentation of June 2026 State of Play, Sony and Santa Monica Studio finally pulled back the curtain on the next chapter of the God of War series. Titled God of War Laufey, it shifts the spotlight away from Kratos and Atreus, instead putting players in control of Faye, whose actions set much of the Norse saga in motion.
While the reveal trailer offered a lengthy 20+ minute first look, Sony stopped short of announcing a release date or window. This is in contrast to other major announcements; Marvel’s Wolverine is locked in for September 15, and the long-awaited Phantom Blade Zero gets a summer 2026 preorder window. Unsurprisingly, many are now worried that even an early 2028 release window would be too hopeful. However, a comment from a well-known industry insider suggested fans may not need to wait as long as they fear.
“FWIW I wouldn’t read too much into God of War Laufey not getting a release date or window,” wrote Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier on Bluesky. “In contrast to a lot of other big announcements, this one *isn’t* years away.” Although still far from a concrete window, at least his statement should reassure those who want to challenge the gods again. Adding to the optimism, even the official PlayStation Blog wrote that God of War Laufey is ‘coming soon’ to PlayStation 5.
According to the reveal trailer and details shared on the PlayStation Blog, the game begins right after Faye’s funeral in God of War 2018. But instead of remaining dead, she awakens in a mysterious realm known as the Everywhen, the birthplace of magic — and where gods from different mythologies compete for power. Faye then soon learns that her plan to protect Kratos and Atreus is under threat, and she’s forced to journey through this unfamiliar realm. This new entry also aims to answer a long-running question in the franchise: what happens to the gods when they die?
In terms of gameplay, Santa Monica Studio promises to blend elements from both the Greek and Norse sagas of the series. Faye herself will be able to use her soul-manipulation abilities, allowing her to separate enemies’ souls from their bodies and use them in combat. God of War Laufey also introduces new companions, with Jack Quaid as the cosmic cube Phranque and Perlina Lau as Rue, guardian of a powerful enchanted sword. Deborah Ann Woll also reprises her role as Faye.
God of War Laufey is now available to wishlist on the PlayStation Store. As for when we’ll actually get to play it, Sony is keeping mum just yet. At the very least, we won’t need to wait until the PS6 drops to continue exploring the God of War universe.
