Jack Black’s Goosebumps beat out The Martian’s two-week winning streak to claim the top spot at the U.S. box office.
In its first week, Goosebumps earned $23 million, compared to The Martian’s $21 million this week. Goosebumps are based on the characters created by R.L. Stine, who is portrayed by Jack Black in the film.
However, it is still an impressive weekend for The Matt Damon-led The Martian. The film’s 17-day total out-grosses Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. In terms of the U.S. domestic box office, The Martian has earned $143 million so far, while Interstellar earned $109 million after the same period of time.
Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies earned an estimated $15.3 million, good enough to come in 3rd this weekend. Crimson Peak earned slightly less, at $13.1 million, to come in 4th place.
Sicario came in 8th, bringing in $4.5 million and accumulating $34 million domestically, against a $30 production budget, making it a domestic success commercially. Hotel Transylvania 2 continues to rake in big bucks as well, coming in 5th place with $12.6 million, and bringing its domestic total to $136 million.
Finally, the biggest winner this weekend may once again be Steve Jobs, the biopic starring Michael Fassbender based on the life of the former Apple CEO. Adding 56 theaters, it accumulated $1.5 million, averaging $25,000 per theater. It opens nationwide this weekend, October 23rd, and looks to be a big success financially.
