Adapting source material can be tricky when a change is not what the fans want. In a rare instance, the actor is on the same side as the audience. Master Chief actor Pablo Schreiber has called the sex scene in Paramount’s Halo season 1 “a huge mistake.” He fought for it not to happen, but ultimately, the divisive scene occurred.
The scene in question saw the lead have sex with Covenant spy prisoner Makee (Charlie Murphy). The newly introduced character to the universe was captured by the alien army when she was young. She rose to power within those ranks and shares some of the same qualities as Master Chief, as they can interact with artifacts in a way that nobody else can. After a shared vision in episode six, they have sex in episode eight. To make the divisive scene more awkward, Cortana (Jen Taylor) watches them.

In an interview published today with SFX magazine via GamesRadar, Pablo Schreiber shed some light on the Halo scene that upset fans, who were already not happy by how much he was taking off his helmet. He said that the “decision to make the connection” between his character and Murphy’s “a romantic connection was a huge mistake.” He spoke his mind but ultimately respected the decision as he didn’t “write the scripts.”
I felt it was a huge mistake at the time and I argued against it and fought against it. But I am who I am. I don’t write the scripts. I only give my opinion. It wasn’t listened to.

The live-action series has made plenty of deviations from the games. It is not uncommon, as adaptations of books do it all the time, and other game adaptations have done the same, like The Last of Us season 1. As season 2 arrives soon, we will see what other changes are made and how fans will react.
Halo season 2 premieres on Paramount Plus on February 8. It will start with the first two episodes before going to one episode per week.
