HBO has just ordered a pilot for a new Game of Thrones prequel series. This is the first of five planned spinoffs to be announced.
This story was first reported by Joe Otterson of Variety. Jane Goldman, known for her work with the Kingsman series and X-Men: Days of Future Past, is the co-creator of the project along with George R.R. Martin himself. Goldman and Martin have written the story and will act as the executive producers. Goldman will also be the series’ showrunner.
Here is a quick plot synopsis from the Variety article:
“Taking place thousands of years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” Goldman’s series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend–it’s not the story we think we know.”
Daniel Zelman (Damages and Bloodlines) and Vince Gerardis (Game of Thrones) will also serve as executive producers for this new series.
Although there are four other spin-off series in the works at HBO, none of them will revolve around Robert’s Rebellion (Robert Baratheon’s path to the Iron Throne). Max Borenstein, Carly Wray, Brian Helgeland, and Bryan Cogman are the writers behind these other potential spin-offs.
We will keep you updated with any new details regarding Game of Thrones’ final season or this prequel series. The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones will air sometime in Summer 2019.
