Abdul El-Sayed recently beat Mike Rogers in Michigan, securing his spot as the new U.S. Senator for the Wolverine State. His victory speech made waves on social media, as the newly elected Michigan U.S. Senator did not mince words about his opponents, such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
In a clip of the speech shared on social media, El-Sayed can be seen celebrating his victory. Not only did El-Sayed crack jokes at U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance’s expense, but he also had words for the “super PACs and special interests who tried to beat us,” saying that he would come for them.
He also thanked AIPAC for “giving the opportunity” to be beaten twice after it invested $42 million against his campaign. The clip ends with El-Sayed saying that these groups tried to paint him as hateful, but that he believes in dignity, peace, and self-determination.
The speech was made soon after El-Sayed won the election, securing 52.5% of the vote against Rogers’ 45.5%.
Abdul El Sayed Becomes U.S. Senator and Michigan Celebrates
Even on a more conservative-leaning social media network like X, most commenters came from seemingly liberal users who were hyped about El-Sayed’s speech. One of them said, “Is it just me, or does he talk like Obama?”
Another wrote: “El-Sayed is such a crazy natural talent. He’s got bags of swagger without sounding like a blowhard or a bully.” Some believed that he would still go far in politics, saying, “He is going to be President.”
Others also celebrated his hard-won victories, first against Steven Haley in the primaries and then against Rogers: “Fought twice, and AIPAC got beaten twice. Both in the internal challenge and in the election. It is over. It’s getting clearer that AIPAC is weakening more and more in the US. Hopefully this is good news for Gaza and Palestine.”
Some folks took their time to remember Stevens’ betrayal, as she supported Republican Mike Rogers just before the midterms: “Haley Stevens career ended tonight. Now that we got Abdul in the Senate, we’re gonna focus on getting her snake [expletive] out of Congress.”
However, not everyone was equally mesmerized by El-Sayed’s speech. One of his detractors noted: “It should be obvious at this point, but boasting when you performed worse than physically possible compared to all of your peers is not becoming of the Senate.”
In any case, this marked one of the most significant Democratic victories in the country, securing another Senate seat as part of the recent blue wave.
