Horizon Forbidden West officially launched last Friday, February 18, and fans are happily sinking several hours into the highly anticipated game. The sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn has introduced a variety of new weapons and tools for gamers to use in the post-apocalyptic world. One of the vital tools in the new game is the Pullcaster, effectively used as a grappling hook that Aloy can utilize to maneuver around the world more easily, especially those high altitude areas. Here’s how to use the essential Pullcaster in Horizon Forbidden West.

(Updated on August 7, 2024 – Fact-checked and clarified the guide’s steps).

Horizon Forbidden West: How to Use the Pullcaster

How to Use the Pullcaster in Horizon Forbidden West

The Pullcaster is introduced early on as part of the story in Horizon Forbidden West. Aloy will unavoidably find the tool in the tutorial portion of the game. The Pullcaster has two primary functions: a climbing tool and a grapple. As a climbing aid, the Pullcaster allows Aloy to pull herself up, usually when a blue-colored object is out of reach. ย As a grapple, a white icon will appear, and players need simply to jump or go near it and press X for Aloy to swiftly pull herself towards the object. When Aloy grapples toward a ledge, the character hangs down from the object. Pressing the circle button once right before Aloy reaches her destination will launch her upward. The height this achieves is great if players need to climb a long way up and gives them a bit of a headstart.

The Pullcaster is also used to clear debris or obstacles in front of Aloy and can pull swivel-like objects. When this type of object is in front of them, players can hold down L2 and press the triangle button to switch to the Pullcaster. Then, gamers can simply aim and fire with it using the R2 button. Places where the Pullcaster can be used are usually colored blue, and many appear as grates that can be pulled off.
