‘How Do I Send This to My Boss?’: North Carolina Restaurant Owner Says Good Workers Quit When Managers ‘Protect the Wrong People’

A slippery slope

A North Carolina restaurant owner has sparked a wider workplace debate after sharing his thoughts on why so many good employees end up leaving. In a viral TikTok video, he argued that the problem often isn’t a lack of hardworking staff, but managers who “protect the wrong people” — a message that struck a chord with thousands of viewers online.

The video comes from Robert McCrary’s official TikTok account. McCrary is the owner of The Crazy Pig BBQ & Taphouse in Davidson, North Carolina, where he regularly shares insights and advice about the restaurant industry.

In one of his latest videos, McCrary argues that many restaurants struggle not because they can’t find enough employees, but because managers have become reluctant to hold underperforming staff accountable. He explains, “Some restaurants don’t have a staffing problem. They have a standards problem, because somewhere along the way, they got so desperate for employees, they became afraid to manage the ones they have.”

McCrary goes on to argue that inconsistent management can gradually lower standards across an entire workplace, particularly when businesses avoid confronting problematic employees for fear of being short-staffed. He says, “The employee who’s always late? Nothing happens. The server with a terrible attitude? Everybody works around them. The cook who does whatever he wants? Nobody says anything because we can’t afford to lose him. And little by little, your worst employees start running the restaurant.”

He finishes by warning that avoiding difficult management decisions may end up costing businesses their strongest workers instead. He says, “Every time you refuse to deal with a bad employee because you’re afraid they’ll quit, one of your good employees starts thinking about leaving. Because good employees don’t wanna work in chaos. They don’t wanna carry people who don’t care. And they definitely don’t want to work for a manager who is too afraid to manage. So stop saying you can’t afford to lose your bad employees because if you keep protecting them, they’re gonna cost you the people you couldn’t afford to lose.”

The video quickly sparked discussion online, with many viewers saying McCrary perfectly summed up why they’ve left previous jobs.

Viewers Say They’ve Seen It Happen Firsthand

Many commenters agreed with McCrary’s perspective, with several saying the issue extends far beyond the restaurant industry. One Reddit user wrote, “This is not just at restaurants. It’s across the board.” Another added, “Every manager on earth needs to watch this video.”

Others felt McCrary had summed up the consequences of lowering workplace standards. One commenter wrote, “You lower your standards, your winners leave. You raise the standards, your losers leave. The only question is, who do you want to leave?“

On TikTok, many viewers joked that the video should be shown to their own managers. One person asked, “How do I send this to my boss?” while another quipped, “Put this on my manager’s FYP not mine 😭”

While there is no single answer to managing a successful workplace, McCrary’s comments have clearly resonated with many people who say they’ve experienced similar situations. Whether viewers agree with his take or not, the discussion highlights just how important good leadership can be in retaining employees.
