While you may be able to play Keen Games’ open-world survival RPG wholly in singleplayer, the Frankfurt-based outfit behind 2017’s Portal Knights “strongly encourages” that players make sure to check out the game’s robust co-op offering. After all: the more, the merrier, right? So, for those who’re wondering how co-op multiplayer works in Enshrouded, we’ll clue you in down below. Let’s go!

How Many Players Does Enshrouded’s Co-op Support?

First things first, it’s important to note that Enshrouded supports up to 16 players per server. When you do connect with friends and start playing with other pals, you’ll be able to party up, work together, build bases, explore, and even defeat bosses together.

How Levels and XP Work When Playing with Other Players in Enshrouded, Explained

One of the big questions that remained a mystery until recently, was how Enshrouded would handle the differences in Levels and how the XP allocation that goes along with it will work. After all, when you enter a server, you still possess your own Level, which may differ greatly when compared to other Flameborn on the server. So, what happens if you’re super high level and your friend is just beginning their adventure?

From our experience, if you’re on an advanced server and you’re too under-leveled compared to your teammates, the game employs some light enemy scaling. This means that enemies for lower level players will be a lot easier and dole out less XP. Meanwhile, for high level players, the enemies will be a lot more challenging to defeat, and will dole out more XP.

Interestingly, quest progression is slightly different in co-op multiplayer. You see, it’s important to note that players will need to attack and deal damage to the boss at least once to fulfill the requirements of specific quests. For instance, when we were playing one of the early quests that tasked us to “Clear the Well“, we both needed to strike the Fell Thunderbrute in order for us to both finish the quest.

In other words, if a player doesn’t attack the specific boss, the quest will remain unfinished for them, meaning that you’ll need to redo the quest again.

Is There PvP?

At the time of writing, there is no PvP mode in Enshrouded at all. In fact, we tried our best to deal damage to our online companions — for research-based purposes, of course — but to no avail. At the moment, attacking a friendly companion inflicts no damage.

Keen Games has said that they do not plan to bring any PvP modes to the game, though that could potentially change in the future.

How to Play Online Co-op in Enshrouded

Luckily, joining an online co-op session is pretty straightforward. If you’re unsure, here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • Launch Enshrouded.
  • Click on ‘Play’ at the main menu.
  • From here, you can either Host a game or Join an online game.
  • If you’re joining another player’s game, you’ll need to reach out to them to find out the server’s password via DM. Once you know the password, click on the specific server and enter the password. Select ‘Start’ to begin.
  • If you’re Hosting your own game, you’ll need to create a world, along with a session password. Once that’s done, select ‘Start’ to begin your online adventure.
