After all the news about the death of Mortal Kombat 1 and the possibility of its future DLCs getting canned, it’s the best time to oversee what we need from Mortal Kombat 2 so that it won’t end up like this. Several things can be fine-tuned for a better MK game in the future, some of which have to do with the story, while others are for the sake of the gameplay.
End The Multiverse
First things first, stop this Multiversal story that’s ruining the new era and characters like Havik. Mortal Kombat 1 is like every single time that we see something rooted in the new timeline, there’s a random portal opening and a villain starts screaming nonsense.
That’s 8 seasons of Invasions right there expanded into a DLC called Khaos Reigns. The main narrative and the plot of the new MK universe, however, seem very promising. I loved the way they introduced Raiden and Kung Lao at first and how Johnny Cage bonds with Kenshi. Shang Tsung is also a perfect choice as a villain and I was really hoping to see him control the army of Onaga.
Do you see the problem here? The main plot is awesome for a Mortal Kombat game, yet they give us the previous game’s villains and call them Titans even though Noob Saibot, a mortal, can easily decimate them. So if Mortal Kombat 2 wants a better narrative, it better focus on the one universe that’s filled with potential and unexplored lore. End the Multiverse on Chapter 1 of MK2 and I call it a W.
Introduce New Characters
Speaking of the story, Mortal Kombat 2 is where NetherRealm Studios can go on a full stretch to introduce new characters and explore realms. For example, when young Hanzo Hasashi is now growing up, why not create a new character from the Liu Kuei clan and make him his best friend and probably a future nemesis?
The same goes for the realms. Have you seen anything from the Order realm in the past Mortal Kombat entries? How about the Chaos realm? Edenia? If Mortal Kombat could paint all these realms into one picture two decades ago with Deception, it can do it now in Mortal Kombat 2 as well.
Let the new realms play a bigger role in the Mortal Kombat universe, and for the Fire God’s sake don’t just waste the powerful artifacts like Komidogu and the Dragon Army of Onaga for nothing. There’s a lot to explore and a ton of new things that you can invent by adding them to the other realms; be creative!
Full Krypt And Mini-Games
Now we shift over to the gameplay with this one. Warrior’s Shrine, Invasions, and Towers, none of them are better than a full-fledged Krypt. I might speak for myself here, but uncovering the easter eggs and rewards hidden in the Krypt was one of the reasons that I still play MK11 to this day.
Aside from that, why don’t Mortal Kombat go after extra game modes anymore? Remember Kombat Chess and Motor Kombat from the 3D era? Or the Konquest mode that took us days and months to uncover its easter eggs and unlockable items? With these things vanished, Mortal Kombat feels a bit empty these days.
Solid Online Mode
Online mode is what makes gaming fun nowadays and if Mortal Kombat 2 wants to stay ahead of its opponents, it needs a better Multiplayer mode. Add new game modes, get better servers, and put some exclusive rewards and leagues in the Multiplayer, and Mortal Kombat 2 becomes the best fighting game of the year.
Optimize It For The PC Master Boon, PLEASE!
Mortal Kombat 1 is not optimized, and that’s just a pain in the neck for PC players. I played this game on different setups, from 1080 to RTX 4070, and it still lags when I perform finishers or change the tabs on the menu. Is this gaming in 2025, people? If so, this is very bad. Also, why would I have to wait for 10 minutes for the shaders to load every two times I open the game? This stuff needs fixing before they announce Mortal Kombat 2.
