Baldur’s Gate 3 contains a ton of fights meant to test even the most powerful Tav. Among the behemoth game’s three main acts are countless boss fights that require strategy to overcome. Amid your travels into the caverns underneath the game’s titular city late into Act Three, you will eventually stumble upon an undead dragon in BG3. This formidable foe named Ansur is no pushover. Let’s discuss how to beat Ansur in BG3.
Where To Find The Undead Dragon Ansur in BG3
You must locate the undead dragon before learning how to beat Ansur in BG3. Ansur is found deep underneath the city of Baldur’s Gate and can only be accessed during Act Three. The boss is extremely hard to stumble upon. However, clues send you in the right direction if you accomplish some major story beats.
Duke Ravenguard is a character your Tav has chased for the entire game. If you finally rescue him, he will appear in your camp and provide a quest that hints at something lurking underneath the city.
You should then head to the Wyrm Rock’s Fortress prison. After heading into the cell area, you will immediately turn left and reach a dead end with a torch on the wall. Put them out and then strike them with a lightning ability or spell to open a secret passageway into the bowels underneath the city.
When you reach an Iron Gate, you will enter into the Wyrmway. There are four trials in each corner room in this cavernous area:
- Chamber of Courage
- Chamber of Insight
- Chamber of Justice
- Chamber of Strategy
Completing all four of these puzzles will unlock the door leading to the undead dragon in BG3. The beast is simply a corpse until you interact with it, so you can take all the necessary time before engaging it. Let’s now explain how to beat Ansur in BG3.
How To Defeat Ansur in BG3
After clicking the corpse of Ansur, a cutscene will play with some major story spoilers. After it ends, you will be able to engage the dragon properly.
Ansur in BG3 is a level 17 undead dragon immune to many conditions, including hypnotized, dazed, or frightened. Furthermore, he is resistant to lightning, poison, and necrotic damage. Utilizing these sources of damage will just hinder you in the fight with Ansur in BG3.
Ansur has the following abilities to use during the encounter:
- Fly – Will fly into the air.
- Lightning Breath – Frontal lightning cone.
- Multiattack – Ansur’s basic melee. It can cleave multiple targets.
- Slam – A ground attack that could cause whoever it hits to go prone.
- Gather Power – The most dangerous part of the encounter. Ansur gathers energy for two turns before unleashing a devastating Stormheart Nova AoE attack across the arena.
Keep your team slightly separated to avoid all being hit by the AoE attacks. Immediately lay into the dragon with everything you have. Arrows of Dragonslaying are very effective here. The boss will also summon Water Myrmidons. These attack your team but can be largely ignored as Ansur will likely kill them with his attacks.
Watch for blue areas on the ground and avoid them, as lightning will strike there. When you see the boss cast Gather Power, this is your cue to ensure your entire team is safe within two turns. There are two ways to accomplish this:
- Most Effective – Bring along a party member with the Globe of Invulnerability level six spell. When the boss begins channeling its attack, cast it and have all party members enter the dome before the two turns end. This will completely negate the Stormheart Nova attack from Ansur in BG3.
- The crystals around the area will grant you a buff that gives resistance to all elements when they are destroyed. This will cause Stormheart Nova to do significantly less damage. However, it is the more risky option as you will still take a lot of damage. Furthermore, Ansur can destroy the crystals with his attacks and deny you the buff.
Utilizing these tactics will eventually allow you to defeat Ansur in BG3.
Ansur’s Loot in Baldur’s Gate 3
The best part about defeating this undead dragon is the loot you will find once it is dead for good. The boss will have the legendary Balduran’s Giantslayer greatsword, arguably the game’s best melee weapon.
Furthermore, Ansur in BG3 has an additional secret stash found in his lair. Head to the north section of the arena. Here, you will find the Helm of Balduran on a nearby altar.
This is how to beat Ansur in BG3. There are many alternative or creative ways to tackle bosses in the game. Experiment and save often while you learn them.
BG3 is available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
