Sometimes backpacks are accessories. Other times, they’re the key to monster-slaying glory. Backpack Battles allows you to combine the items in your bag into more potent forms. Whether you’re upgrading a sword with a couple of whetstones or brewing health potions to close your wounds, combining items matters. By visiting the shop, gathering up ingredients, and arranging them in specific combinations in your backpack, you can turn random goodies into special tools. Between improved base stats and new buffs, there’s a lot to gain. Here’s how to combine items in Backpack Battles.

You can only combine compatible items in Backpack Battles. To check if items are compatible, hover your cursor over one in the shop menu. If blue lines radiate out of it, you can combine it with another item. Items with which it is compatible will also radiate blue lines, making it easy to check which items work together. You can only combine items that are in your backpack next to one another, so make sure you have all your ingredients together before you get started. Once the compatible items are side by side, the name of the resulting item will appear so you know what you’re getting.

The lines connecting your components turn from blue to gold when the combination is ready, but the combination won’t unite in a new item until all the necessary ingredients are together. To finish the combination, you need to play one round with the items arranged together. The resulting item will appear at the end of the round. That means there’s a strategic element involved since you won’t have access to your new gear right away, even if you possess all the ingredients for the recipe at the start of the round.

Required Item Tips

To combine most items you only need two components. A few, however, require three, and there are even a couple of Goobert items that require four. Those are the Rainbow Goobert Epicglob Uberviscous and Rainbow Goobert Deathslushy Mansquisher. Keep in mind that you can go to “Recipe” on the main menu to see a complete list of all the recipes you’ve unlocked. Doing so keeps the guesswork out of combining items and lets you focus on what’s most important: slaying monsters. To summarize, here’s what you need to do to combine items in Backpack Battles:

  • Put desired items together in your backpack
  • Confirm the lines connecting them are golden
  • Complete the round

Backpack Battles is available for PC.
