In a surprising reveal at The Game Awards 2023, we found out that God of War: Ragnarok is getting new content. The Valhalla DLC was revealed to be released for free less than a week after it was announced. Now that it’s here, there’s the question of whether or not you need to play the base game before starting. We share exactly how to download and start the Valhalla DLC in God of War: Ragnarok.

To start the Valhalla DLC for God of War: Ragnarok, you need 8GB of space. Ensuring that you have the space available is the first step. Once installed through the PlayStation store, you won’t need to worry about making it to a specific point in the game before booting it up. When you start the game, you’ll notice the Valhalla DLC just below the New Game + option in the main menu.

Albeit a little odd, the DLC isn’t a part of the main game. Because of this, you can start it immediately. However, we don’t really recommend that since the story does spoil some of what happened at the conclusion of the main game. If you can help it at all, finish

The progress is also completely separate from the main game. No matter what you finished God of War: Ragnarok with, you’ll start with the stats and equipment specific to Valhalla. It also helps that it’s primarily a rogue-like experience with several other nuances not previously available. For starters, Valhalla takes the god of war to the titular location of Valhalla within Norse mythology. He’ll also be going against a series of trials to prove himself against the path before him.
