While Ancient Coins for the Pirate Emporium are primarily acquired with real money, Sea of Thieves fans can also procure this premium currency by defeating an ultra-rare mob type known as Ancient Skeletons. Unlike the many Skeleton variants that seafarers encounter during a voyage, Ancient Skeletons are non-hostile and will never attack players. Moreover, these undead creatures have very little HP, making them easy to kill with one to two shots or strikes with a blade. However, an Ancient Skeleton’s getaway is as sudden as its appearance, as it will scramble away from players and bury into the ground within a 20-second time frame, never to be seen again.
Finding Ancient Skeletons in Sea of Thieves
To find an Ancient Skeleton in Sea of Thieves, players must travel to an Island, Fort, or Sea Fort and make sure they are traversing solid ground. If players hear a distinct tune play, followed by a rackety jingling of coins, they will know they are near an Ancient Skeleton spawn.

Similar to The Shrouded Ghost Megalodon, Ancient Skeletons are extremely rare and will spawn alone in Sea of Thieves. According to sources at the Sea of Thieves Wiki, these Skeleton variants have “a higher spawn rate in areas with higher player concentrations.” While this information has not been officially confirmed, players are encouraged to keep an eye out for servers with lots of activity and a high user population, as Ancient Skeletons might be more likely to spawn into their world. Seafarers should also keep in mind that Ancient Skeletons will not spawn when a server is locked down for merger with another server.
As noted above, Sea of Thieves players have approximately 20 seconds to hunt down and eliminate an Ancient Skeleton after it spawns. The Ancient Skeletons are invulnerable to Firebombs and can be slain by Phantoms and Ocean Crawlers. If this occurrence happens, players will not receive any Ancient Coins; therefore, players must do their best to quickly eliminate the fleeing Skeleton if a Phantom or Ocean Crawler is present. Users do not need to worry about having their friends kill Ancient Skeleton for the loot, as the prize pool of Ancient Coins is always shared among Crewmates.
